This Zogby poll has been sneered by both left and right..
"Mr. Bush has also shown weakness in what is considered to be his best region, the South. While Kerry's choice of Senator John Edwards gives him his biggest boost, his economic populism and courting of veterans are also key in his eroding of Mr. Bush's support. Not only has Kerry now come to a tie with Bush in favorability in the South (55% for both), the Kerry-Edwards ticket has pulled ahead, 48% to 46% in the South. President Bush's job performance is down to only 44% in the South, and only 43% of Southerners think the country is headed in the right direction..."
But today's ABC poll seems to suggest this is not a fantasy for Kerry to win in the South though no detailed number is presented..
"Among groups, the largest shifts in Kerry's favor occurred among economy voters, young adults, southerners, white Catholics and college graduates. Kerry and Bush now run about evenly among white Catholics, a key swing voter group. And they're even in this poll in the South, customarily a Bush stronghold. Edwards might have moved that number; it'll be important to watch whether or not it moves back. "
I still like Zogby the most, Zogby's poll always sets the trendline.
